Early Life
James Kimberley Corden was born on 22nd August 1978 in Hillingdon, Greater London. His father, Malcom Corden, was a musician in the RAF band who later sold Christian books and bibles. His mother, Margaret Corden nรฉe Collins, was a social worker.
James grew up in Hazlemere, a large village in Buckinghamshire, 2.5 miles northeast of High Wycombe. Other notable residents of the village include Sir William Ramsay, a noble prize-winning chemist, Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, an aviator and aircraft designer, and Leigh-Anne Pinnock, a singer in the band Little Mix.
James attended Park Middle School followed by Holmer Green Upper School. He also attended the Jackie Palmer Stage School.
He has two sisters, an older sister Andrea (who was born in 1975) and a younger sister, Ruth. Ruth is a civil servant.
At school, James was teased for his middle name Kimberley. He said โliterally every man in my family has it [as their middle name] โ itโs a tradition. For ages I pretended it was Karl, but my sister was going out with one of my mates and told him, then he told the whole school. It wasnโt great.โ
Early career
Growing up, Corden was always an entertainer but despite going to many auditions, he didnโt succeed until he was 17. His first role was in Martin Guerre, the musical in 1996. He had one line: โRoast the meats.โ
Corden went on to focus on TV. He was in the British comedy series Boyz Unlimited in 1999 and also appeared in advertisements for Tango the previous year. The 1998 Tango commercial actually got banned as it was body shaming and showed a naked Corden being bullied.
In 2000, he played the part of a bookish student in the British comedy-drama series Teachers. He also appeared in Hollyoaks, Little Britain, and Dalziel and Pascoe.
Around this time, he also appeared in four films: Whatever Happened to Harold Smith, All or Nothing, Heartlands, and Cruise of the Gods.
Rise to Fame
Between 2000 and 2005, James Corden played the role of Jamie Rymer in Fat Friends, a drama set in Leeds that explored the lives of slimming club members. This led him to be nominated for the Royal Television Societyโs best newcomer award.
Stepping away from the small screen, James Corden played Timms in The History Boys in London. He also travelled to Broadway, Wellington, Sydney, and Hong Kong too. This was in 2004.
In 2006, there was a film adaption of the play, which starred Corden. He also appeared in the film Starter for 10 the same year.
Cordenโs true rise to prominence, though, came from his own production Gavin & Stacey, which he co-wrote with Ruth Jones, who was his co-star in Fat Friends. Gavin & Stacey was well-received by critics and won lots of awards.
Beyond Gavin & Stacey
While writing and starring in Gavin & Stacey, James Corden also took on other roles.
He started in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People and Lesbian Vampire Killers. He also hosted various shows, including Big Brotherโs Big Mouth, the Brit Awards 2009, A League of Their Own, and Sports Relief.
The First Carpool Karaoke
In 2011, Corden reprised his role as Smithy for a Comic Relief sketch. His sketch had appearances from the band JLS, the then UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Justin Bieber, and Paul McCartney.
This sketch was the first time we saw Corden do his Carpool Karaoke sketch. It was George Michael that hopped in his car and shared songs with him.
One Man, Two Guvnors and Childrenโs shows
In June 2011, Corden appeared in the hit play One Man, Two Guvnors. This play was cinecast worldwide as a part of the National Theatre Live. It transferred to the West End after the tour.
This show was critically acclaimed and won The Evening Standard Theatre Awards for Best Play 2011.
As well as his theatre role, Corden starred in many childrenโs TV and film roles.
This included the musical film Into the Woods โ a Disney film adaptation. He also narrated the BBC film adaption of the Roald Dahl novel Esio Trot, which was broadcast on New Yearโs Day in 2015. Finally, he also appeared in Trolls as Biggie.
The Late Late Show
In 2015, Corden became the host of the American talk show The Late Late Show. This was where his Carpool Karaoke took off. This included a sketch with Adele, which became the most viral YouTube video of 2016.
The video currently has over 260 million views and is still the most watched segment on the show’s YouTube channel.
The presenter has stated that his favourite ever Car Pool Karaoke was with Beatles legend, Sir Paul McCartney which was filmed back in 2018 in the singer’s hometown of Liverpool.
In April 2022, Corden announced he would leave the show in 2023.
Corden’s Personal Life
For several years, Corden lived with Dominic Cooper, his co-star in The History Boys. Cooper introduced James Corden to Julia Carey, who later became his wife.
Corden married Julia Carey on 15th September 2012 after three years of dating.
Julia Carey is an American producer. Corden has claimed that the first thing he ever said to her was that she was the most beautiful woman in the world.
When the pair married, they had already had their first child, a son called Max who was born in 2011. His siblings, two sisters, followed. Carey (whose first name is her motherโs maiden name) was born in 2014 and Charlotte in 2017.
When Charlotte was born, Corden was meant to be hosting The Late Late Show, but One Direction singer Harry Styles took over hosting for him.
According to some reports, James gave his son the middle name McCartney as an unusual payment for Paul McCartney to appear in his Comic Relief sketch. Max also has the middle name Kimberley, which is also Jamesโ middle name.
The family keeps a low profile and live in Los Angeles in a star-studded neighborhood. Corden also has a house in Belsize Park in London for when heโs in the United Kingdom.

James Corden’s Famous Quotes
โOn stage, you have to have incredible confidence, or you would stop doing it. But I donโt think I will ever get to the point where I go, โI know exactly what I am doing,โ and I donโt think I want to.โ โ James Corden
โI donโt consider myself to be incredibly confident, or really lacking in confidence. When youโre on Jonathan Rossโ or Graham Nortonโs show, inevitably thereโs something to sell. And thereโs a live audience; youโre sat between Cameron Diaz and Tinie Tempah โ I donโt really see it as โme.โ It would be odd if it was.โ โ James Corden
โI donโt care about awards and all the attention being a โcelebrityโ gets you. Itโs just part of the job.โ โ James Corden
โYou can either hope and pray you donโt get picked on, or you can, in a way, almost make yourself a bigger target, because itโs harder to bully something thatโs really big. Itโs easy to bully something thatโs small and frail.โ โ James Corden
โMy biggest tip is thisโฆ treat bread like chocolate. You wouldnโt have a chocolate bar in the morning and then a double chocolate bar at lunch and then some chocolate before dinner. I was essentially eating a loaf of bread a day. And that doesnโt work for me.โ โ James Corden
โI guess I have a faith. I have an overriding feeling that all of this can’t be for nothing. But then I also fully understand that it might be.โ
