Wallen’s Early Life

Morgan Cole Wallen was born on 13th May 1993 to Lesli and Tommy Wallen.

His father was a preacher and his mother, a teacher. He was schooled by his father.

Wallen has two sisters, Ashlyne and Mikaela.

Both of Wallenโ€™s parents loved contemporary religious rock and hard rock. Wallen has been musical since childhood; he sang in a choir from the age of three and took lessons in violin from age five.

Morgan Wallen attended Gibbs High School in Corryton, Tennessee, the same school as the country music singer Kenny Chesney.

Interests and Direction

Despite being very musical, Wallenโ€™s first interest was sports. He aspired to play professional basketball but an injury to his elbow meant that he pursued music instead.

He first attracted attention in 2014 as a contestant on the reality TV show The Voice during its sixth season.

At first, Morgan was a member of Usherโ€™s team but he went on to join Maroon 5 frontman, Adam Levineโ€™s team.

After signing to Big Loud Records in 2016, Wallen released the single โ€œThe Way I Talkโ€ in September 2016.

It was co-written by Ben Hayslip, Jessi Alexander, and Chase McGill. This was the lead single from his first album If I Know Me.

The song reached #35 on Hot Country Songs, #50 on Canada Country, and #30 on Country Airplay, marking Morgan Wallenโ€™s first entries on each of the charts.

The single was also certified Gold by Music Canada.

2017 saw Wallen begin writing songs and he co-wrote Jason Aldeanโ€™s single โ€œYou Make it Easyโ€, which reached #1 on Country Airplay on 5th May 2018.

In its first week, the single sold 77,000 copies.

Debut Album

Morgan Wallen released his debut album on 27th April 2018.

Entitled If I Know Me, it contained his second single, โ€œUp Downโ€.

The album reached #10 on the US Billboard 200 and was #1 on the US Top Country Albums chart.

If I Know Me was certified platinum by the RIAA in September 2020.

โ€œUp Downโ€ was released on 27th November 2017 and was a collaboration with country music duo, Florida Georgia Line.

This song reached #1 on the Country Airplay chart.

Wallen released two more singles from his debut album. โ€œWhiskey Glassesโ€ was released on 30th July 2018 and also reached #1 on the Country Airplay chart.

โ€œChasinโ€™ Youโ€ was released on 29th July 2019. This was Wallenโ€™s third #1 on the Country Airplay chart. It was also his second song to reach the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Second Album

In 2020, the lead single of Wallenโ€™s second studio album โ€œMore Than My Hometownโ€ was released to country radio.

Later the same year, the song โ€œ7 Summersโ€ was released. This broke the record on Apple Music for the most first-day streams of a country song.

It peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was his first top 10 song on this chart. Whatโ€™s more, it was chosen by Time as one of 2020โ€™s best songs.

Wallenโ€™s second album became a double album entitled Dangerous: The Double Album.

Controversy and Arrest

Like so many prominent musicians who hit the big time, controversy is never too far behind and Wallen is no different.

Around the time of โ€œMore Than My Hometownโ€, Wallen was arrested for public intoxication and disorderly conduct outside Kid Rockโ€™s bar in Nashville.

He later apologized for his conduct on social media.

Covid-19 Criticism

Subsequently, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Wallen was criticised after videos emerged of him on TikTok showing him partying in a bar in Tuscaloosa, Alabama after a football game.

He was shown to be maskless and violating rules on social distancing. He was also singing at a party in someoneโ€™s home, and kissing women.

Due to his actions, Saturday Night Live producers postponed his appearance, which was due a week after the incident.

He later appeared as a guest on 5th December and was in a parody sketch about the controversy.

Racial Slur Use

In early 2021, Morgan Wallen was once again involved in a controversy when TMZ, a tabloid journalism online newspaper, released a video showing Morgan Wallen using the N-word.

He used the racial slur with his friends as they entered his home.

Wallen apologized with a statement but suffered serious consequences.

Many radio stations including SiriusXM Satellite Radio and iHeartRadio removed Wallenโ€™s songs from their playlists temporarily.

All of his songs as well as any promotional photographs were also removed from Spotify, Pandora, and Apple Music.

Big Loud, Wallenโ€™s record label, suspended its contract with him for an indefinite period.

Whatโ€™s more, the Academy of Country Music issued a statement announcing that Morgan Wallen and his album would not be eligible for the 56th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards.

Wallen eventually released a video of apology and specifically asked his fans to not come to his defence.
